Nowadays, we are living in the LED lighting time, and the LED downlight can be found everywhere. So, learn about how to do a professional down light Installation is very important to every house owner, not only the salesmen and electricians. Because when you got these tips, they can help you save more money and get a better application experience at the same time. That’s why we are going to share some useful tips in this post to help you make a better and professional LED recessed downlight installation.
How many lights do I need for my house LED recessed downlight installation?
Base on years light planning experience, we find that installing few more downlights than the quantity of your room lighting required and use different switches to control these lights is a better installation way.
Let’s use the kitchen LED recessed downlight installation as example, you will totally understand why more lights will be better. Put some downlights over your worktop in the kitchen and controlled by one switch, then the rest place’s downlights controlled by another switch (if these switches with dimmable function will be great). With this lighting system, you will get wonderful task lighting for cooking area and the whole kitchen’s lighting system’s brightness is adjustable to meet different time and different situation requirements (some downlights have the color temperature adjustable function, which can make more excellent lighting effects).
Give every downlight a power plug!
A-Plus Lighting team and their customers spend lots of time try to find the best LED recessed downlight installation way. To make each down light with a power plus is a better way. Why we need do this? Because with a plus, LED recessed downlight installation will be more safety and flexible. Compare to connect down lamps directly with power cable way, when you want make some change of your wall and ceiling (like temporarily remove lights for painting) or just want use some new lights to replace old ones, you just need do this job by yourself. NO NEED hires an electrician to do this job for you and pay him $80-100/hr, if you had gave your downlight a power plug when they have been installed into your house.
LED downlight with a plus make its installation safer and easier for yourself or your employees. For example, when you are building a new house or repainting it, the temporarily removed downlights will be plugged in and clipped into the new ceiling by builders after everything finished. The whole process has no job to ask electricians back, so will save a big part of labor costs – One Germany customer told us an experience of new house build project. The end-user (house owner) planned to connect all downlight into the power grid, so all power cable had to be taped off for electrical safety. When the painters and builders finish their jobs, the electrician team needed came back to finish the LED recessed downlight installation jobs – un-tape the cable ends, then connect them with lamps and put all things into ceiling. This hard wire connection installation way made a extra cost at around €1800 ($2010) for the power cable tape & un-tape, LED down lights connection jobs, and one more time electricians labor costs.
Can I add extra downlights in the existing lighting circuit?
The extra lamps can be added or not, and how many pieces you can add into the existing lighting circuit is depends on how many loading current space left.
Let us make it simple, if your circuit load current maximum limit is 6A (this limit is according to your Miniature Circuit Breakers standard) and power voltage is 220V (this number can changed to your country’s power supply standard), you have 16pcs 75W downlight on the circuit.
So the actually load current = total wattage / power voltage – 75Wx16 / 220V= 5.45A
Here we can see, the actually load current 5.45A is below the 6A limit, there are still a little bit space for add few more downlights. BUT, please remember that here have to leave some allowance for the voltage fluctuation!
If this 75W downlight is traditional light source fixture and after replaced by 20W LED downlight, you can add more LED downlights on the existing light circuit – 20Wx16 /220V = 1.46A (much lower than 6A limit).
And if this 75W downlight is LED lighting fixture, at the same time your country has the electrical circuit Diversity, which is applicable for the lighting circuit at 66% of total current – 75Wx16 / 220V * 66% = 3.6A, after the diversity application approved, there are more load current allowance to add lights.
If you have any other LED recessed downlight installation questions. Like, should I use the 12V downlight or 220V downlight for my house? And which one is more suitable for kitchen or bathroom? Please just email us, our professional engineer will give you a promptly reply with the right answer.
